A respond letter from Juliano Mer-Khamis

During my studies at The Sam Spiegel Film & Television School in Jerusalem i offerd Juliano to play a roll in my graduate film SUCH EYES He asked me to send him the script and emailed me with an answer after reading the script a few days later

Here is what he wrote:

Hi Rafael,

Very good script….but…!
As you know I have left the Israeli stage and Cinema since I think its collaborating with the Occupation and Apartheid…Your script has all elements of a good script except the fact that it deals with life here as if they are “Normal”, and  as if there is  no Occupation and Aprtihede. In the new Israeli Regime, which lost all moral and human values (as if it had before?) but this time without  a disguise, one can’t stand and not act against it…or you collaborate with it? Your script therefore “normalize” the Aprtihede regime by not acting against it.
You wonder and ask yourself if we should just create art against the occupation? the answer is: YES….!!!….
Thanks anyway for offering me a very good written role,
Juliano

Although i didn’t agree with him at that time, he made me think carefully about the role of an artist and a filmmaker in particular involving life in an occupying society. while the pressure is directing from the Israeli government and the majority of the Jewish population in Israel upon the artists which deals with the I-P conflict - creating de-legitimation of these works; blaming the artists themselves in betrayal, a one sided P.O.V. and being opportunists trying to gain European funds and festivals - its become almost impossible to create a political discussion trough art because of the disappearing of the Israeli audience from these creations;no one is watching these creations and everyone assuming they know the story. I don’t think that the only art we should create should be related to the occupation (as Juliano said)  but i am sure there is a lot of room for that matter, hoping the Israeli audience will take an active part in these crucial important questions and events they are raising.
